Xpress Redi-Set-Go Indoor Grill

I'm not sure how many of you have heard of the Xpress Redi-Set-Go indoor grill.  I had never heard of it before last Christmas.  My mom saw it on an infomercial, and purchased it for me as a Christmas gift.  I opened it up, had no idea what it was, and thought to myself, "This thing is pretty nifty, but is it really practical?"  I made one recipe in it - the Pineapple Inside-Out Cake (a recipe that comes with the unit).  It was alright.  I wasn't that impressed.  So, I put my little grill in the cabinet, forgetting all about it.  There it sat, collecting dust and going unused.

Soon it was time for Easter Seals to pickup in our neighborhood - the time to get rid of unecessary items was upon me.  I pulled my little grill out of the cupboard, and thought, "Am I ever going to use this?"  I don't consider myself a hoarder; if I know for certain I won't use something, it's gone.  I thought about this grill for a day or two.  I decided to try at least two more recipes in it.  If all three recipes were "duds" (or at least something that would be faster/easier to cook with other appliances), then out the door it would go.

First, I tried fried eggs.  Easy enough.  Crack the egg into the cooking well and cook for a few minutes.  Nice!  It was the easiest and fastest fried egg I've ever made.  The cleanup went even faster.  Color me impressed!  Next I tried a pizza.  I went the simple route and used a pita pocket for the crust (christening it "Pit-Za"), and the traditional pizza "trimmings."  It was delicious and the perfect size for two lunches!  Hmmm, impressed again!  I moved on to grilled sandwiches, small cakes, French toast, cookies, potatoes, chicken, and more!  Every time I made something with my Redi-Set-Go, I was impressed - and I continue to be impressed.

My love of this grill sent me on a quest... to find new recipes.  You can sign up for automatic recipe delivery service through the company's website (http://www.redisetgo.com/), but I just didn't have the money for that.  I knew my mission.  That's when I decided to start a blog completely dedicated to new recipes for the Redi-Set-Go.  Redisetgorecipes.com was born:

The recipes included on the blog are all my own creations.  Some are original, some are inspired by other recipes.  In addition to recipes, I provide: tips for using your grill, general tips for your kitchen, and some information about the grill that you cannot currently find elsewhere (e.g. the pan insert types and their volume - in cups and ounces).  I add new content three times a week - minimum.

So if you have one of these grills, I urge you to stop by www.redisetgorecipes.com.  Or, if you're just thinking about getting one, come on over and see what they're all about.  And if you ever get one as a Christmas gift, please don't toss it 'til you try it!  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by all it can do.

Organizing Your Recipe Binder

I am in the process of moving all of my recipes into a new recipe binder.  My previous binder was a bit of a mess with newspaper and magazine clippings, crappy printed pages from the interwebs, and sloppily handwritten messes with crossed out ingredients and edited directions.  Apparently, recipe binders are all the rage now, too.  How fortunate for me!  When I first started putting mine together years ago, there wasn't much custom stuff to download or purchase for it.  I started out with some hokey little printouts I did on my home printer, but I just got sick of looking at them (and I got sick of running out of printer ink!).  So, I headed on over to Zazzle to get some custom pages printed in full color for a small fee.  Friends were asking me where I got them, so I made them available to purchase on Zazzle.  Now you can get them, too.  They come in TONS of colors, you can opt to have them lined (for handwriting) or unlined (for printing via computer), and they are FULLY customizable.  Love them so much!  To see all the styles available, head on over to this store!  You can also get recipe grading stickers, which are simply awesome for sticking to a recipe page of any kind and giving the recipe a quick grade (A-F) or rating (1-5).  The stickers are the perfect size to fit into the "Notes" section on the recipe pages.

Another Way to Organize Your Bookmarks

A few days ago, we talked about organizing your internet bookmarks with Tidy Favorites.  But maybe you don't want to install additional software on your machine, maybe you run an Apple machine, maybe you're more comfortable with website titles (instead of the new thumbnails), or maybe you just don't like Tidy Favorites.  I was actually going through some of my own favorites (have to clean them out from time to time, you know) when I found LinkaGoGo.  LinkaGoGo is the site I used long before I found Tidy Favorites.  I think two of the coolest features of LinkaGoGo is being able to (1) password protect your favorites and (2) share them with friends.  The real reason I stopped using is it simply because your favorites are stored on their central hub.  I'm a bit of  a major control freak, and I like having my favorites on my own computer and backing them up as often as I deem necessary - which sadly, is all too often...

Organizing Your Cleaning Supplies

Last month I posted how to Organize Your Baby Bibs.  Since Emmy no longer uses bibs, I decided that I'd like to show you what I use the bib holder for lately:

As you may remember, this particular curtain rod is installed on the inside of a cupboard door.  The same curtain rod used to previously hold bibs, now conveniently holds all of my spray bottles.  This keeps the spray bottles up high (so little hands cannot reach), and it keeps them handy and at eye-level.

Some of you may be interested in the cleaning bottle holder inside the cupboard as well.  I wish I could take credit for that too, but the previous homeowner installed it.  It's actually rather neat, and in the future I'll try to post schematics for it.

Blueprint Cleanse Alternative: Kathleen's Cleanse

I have been needing a good fast or cleanse for some time now.  I wanted a way to clear up my skin, improve my sleeping, gain some energy, and drop some excess water weight.  So, when I found the Blueprint Cleanse, I got uber excited.  The juices are pressed, measured, and bottled for you already.  All you have to do is drink it, as their slogan suggests, "We think, you drink."  Then... I saw the pricetag.  This cleanse costs a whopping $65 per DAY, and that does not include shipping costs.  I would love to try it, but at that price, I simply cannot justify it.  So, I started out on a mission to create a similar plan, that offered the convenience of the BPC, but with a much more attractive pricetag.  Of course I know that fresh fruits and veggies are best, but juicing them just simply is not convenient for me.  I wanted something that I could more or less grab-and-go.  And thus, "Kathleen's Cleanse" was born.

Now, before I get into any specifics of my cleanse, let me first tell you what it did for me.  I went on this juice-fueled fast for 10 days.  Here's what happened in those 10 days time:
  • Dropped 9 pounds of water weight
  • Stayed asleep all night (may not sound like a big deal, but it is!)
  • Started waking up (on average) an hour earlier, without as much grogginess
  • Felt lighter and less "bloated" than usual
  • Skin brightened, but acne did not clear up
  • Increased enjoyment of healthier foods/flavors

So, how much did a 10-day fruit fast cost me?  Believe it or not, 10 days worth of ingredients only cost me $75.  If I had gone on the Blueprint Cleanse for 10 days, it would have cost me $650 (Yikes!).  That's quite a difference in price, and it's a price that I can certainly live with.  Keep in mind that I found the stores with the lowest prices for my ingredients.  I ended up buying supplies from 2 different stores, because it was more frugal to do so.  I suggest shopping around before you buy all of your ingredients.

Kathleen's Cleanse Daily "Meal" Plan:

16oz : V8 V-Fusion Smoothie (any flavor)
18oz : Spiced Lemonade (recipe below)
16oz : V8 V-Fusion + Green Tea (any flavor)
16oz : V8 V-Fusion Fruit/Veggie Juice (any flavor)
16oz : Cinnamon Almond Milk (recipe below)
32oz : V8 Original, Low Sodium
Water - as much as you want/need

Part of the beauty of this cleanse is that it can change to the taste preference of the person on it.  Or maybe you just want to switch things up from time to time and try new flavors... you can!  All of the juices come in a variety of flavors, to suit any taste.  The only stipulation is that you cannot drink any of the "light" versions of juices, because they use artificial sugars.  The full calorie content is necessary, as is the natural sugars.  The purpose of a cleanse is to get rid of some of the "junk" in your body, and the artificial sugars are junk.

I calculated my daily caloric intake to be around 800-900 calories.  This works for me because I am so short, and I only do very light physical activity while on a cleanse.  If you need more calories daily, simply increase the amount of juice(s) or almond milk you drink.  Only you can know how many calories your body needs.

Spiced Lemonade Recipe (enough for one day):
14oz warm water
1/2 cup lemon juice
1-2 tablespoons light agave nectar (depending on taste)
Dash (or two) of cayenne pepper

Mix water and lemon juice well.  Put into a lidded container.  Add agave nectar and dash or two of cayenne pepper.  Close lid tightly and shake well.  Chill for at least 8 hours, shaking occasionally.  For reference, I used bottled lemon juice in lieu of fresh-squeezed.

Cinnamon Almond Milk (enough for one day):
16oz chilled almond milk
few dashes of cinnamon

Pour almond milk into a lidded container.  Sprinkle with cinnamon; shake well.  Ready to drink.  For reference, I use "Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk."

***EDIT:
This cleanse did a number of good things for my body, but after going off of the cleanse, I did not have a menstrual cycle for 6 months after the fast ended.  It also increased my levels of insulin resistance.  While these issues may not affect everyone, it is important to note if you are trying to conceive or have diabetes and/or PCOS.  I have PCOS and according to my doctor, this cleanse probably aggravated it.  It should also be noted that the 9 pounds of water weight I lost, were gained back within a week.  But if you're doing a cleanse to lose weight, you should stop.  A cleanse should be done as a detox, and never with the intent to lose weight, because the weight will not stay off permanently.

Reduce Your Junk Mail (Postal)

I always thought that by tossing my junk mail into the recycle bin, that I was living greener.  But what would be greener than recycling your junk mail?  Not receiving it at all!  Sign up at DMAchoice and start reducing the amount of mail that you receive.  They sort mail into four main categories: credit offers, catalogs, magazine offers, and "other" mail offers (such as donations, banks, etc.).  You can choose which of the four categories you want to continue receiving mail from (if any), or you can choose not to receive mail from anyone that you haven't previously purchased from or supported.  All changes are effective for 5 years!  Which simply means that you can change them manually before 5 years is up, or you can let the timer run out and in 5 years just reapply your settings.

Organize Your Internet Favorites

My computer is and always has been my "hoarder zone."  I don't hoard things that are tangible, but I do hoard things that are digital.  I can't seem to find the strength to delete crappy graphics I've made, blog posts that were never finished, or internet favorites that I know I'll probably never visit again.  Now, just because I hoard these things, does not mean that I do not do so in an organized fashion.  Today I just wanted to share with you one of the many tools in my organizing belt: Tidy Favorites.

I'm not a huge fan of the "online" version, simply because sometimes I don't want to "sign in" just to add a site to my favorites.  That's why I went with their PC version (which can be downloaded here).  I prefer the free version because, well, it's free.  I believe the only difference between free and pro is the option to search through your favorites.  Because my favorites are all in seperate folders and already very organized, I don't really need this feature.

Let me tell you why I love this little jewel.  When you open it up, you see thumbnails of the websites (a skosh similar to Pinterest or Juxtapost) instead of just the websites' names.  The thumbnails can be resized if you need them larger or smaller.  You can rearrange your favorites within your folders by a simple drag/drop function.  It will consolidate all of your bookmarks from each of your browsers into one central location; it's very helpful if you use multiple browsers (which I sometimes do).  Links that you only need temporarily (such as an article to read or a page a friend sent to you) can be easily located and deleted.

How I Use Tidy Favorites:
When you add bookmarks to Tidy Favorites, it places them into a stack in the right section of the screen.  You can choose to view those bookmarks now, leave them for later, or you can organize them into folders (that you create) to hold onto permanently.  The orange tabs at the bottom of the screen are my folders: Recipes, Blog Crap, Fonts & Clipart, Craft Stuff, Bills, Tutorials, etc.  In each folder (or tab) you can create subfolders to further organize your favorites.  For example, you can see my "Recipes" folder above.  I have created subfolders to organize all of my recipes: Appetizers, Beverages, Breads & Pastries, Sandwiches, Slow Cooker, etc.  The images you see below the folders are recipes that have not yet been organized (don't they look delicious, by the way?).

While my favorites were fairly organized before I ever had this little gadget, now they're "prettier" and easier for me to locate.  Thank you, Tidy Favorites!

8 Ways to Reuse Plastic Bags

Though you may try your hardest to avoid them, you might find that plastic grocery bags still float their way into your life.  When friends and family visit us towing gifts and the occasional casserole, these items always seem to arrive in plastic grocery bags.  But even if you have purchased reusable grocery/shopping bags, you can find alternate uses for the plastic bags you have acquired.

  1. Stuffing For Crafts:  Use plastic bags (along with other materials) to add "bulk" to your craft items.
  2. Stuffing For Accessories:  Stuff into unused purses and/or shoes to help retain their shape.
  3. Protect Hands:  Use plastic bags as "gloves" to protect your hands when cleaning with harsh chemicals (such as bleach or ammonia) or when using polishes/dyes.
  4. Protect Shoes:  Use a bag to cover your shoes when going into a particularly muddy area.
  5. Inhibit Ice:  At night, tie a plastic bag around your car's side mirrors to keep them ice-free in the morning.
  6. Paint Protectors:  When painting, use masking tape to affix plastic bags to items that you don't want covered in paint.
  7. Suitcase Protectors:  Use a plastic bag to keep dirty soles off of other items in your suitcase.
  8. Line Garbage Cans:  Use plastic bags to line small garbage cans (such as in a bathroom).

Organize Your Baby Bibs

When we first brought Emmy home from the hospital, we used to store her bibs in her dresser.  Needless to say, I got sick of running back and forth from her room just to grab a bib or a burpcloth.  I wanted to store her bibs in the kitchen.  To me, that was the most logical and practical place.  I looked all over the place trying to find a "bib organizer" that would hold all of her bibs.  I seriously considered hanging one on the back of her high chair (the kind with pockets).  But, if you know anything about me, you know that I like things out of sight when not in use.  Especially baby stuff.  That's when I thought of a simple and super-cheap way to make my own.  I had an unused curtain rod lying around, and I decided to mount it directly to the back of one of our cupboard doors, hanging the bibs on the rod.  It's also quite versatile.  Later when bibs are no longer needed, you can use it as a kitchen towel bar, a mug holder (hanging mugs from their handles), or a pot/pan lid holder (depending on how low it hangs and how much room you've got).

Story Time for Children

The public library in our old hometown used to have a phone service especially for children.  Parents could call in for their children and a recording would play, reading the child a story.  It got me wondering if other libraries did something similar, and I started searching for all the story-by-phone services that I could find.

Organizing Your Kitchen Spices

This is a great way to utilize the unused space on the side of your fridge.  You can organize a magnetic spice rack - one that can "grow" as needed.  You can use it for just your staple spices, or you can put your entire spice collection in one convenient space:

There are tons of different magnetic spice jars to choose from.  As I am always looking for a bargain, I went with the cheapest ones I could find.  I found mine at Pfaltzgraff.  The best thing about these jars is the clear lid.  When labeling them, you can just write with a Sharpie if that's your preference.  I personally like a more "professional" look.  I opted to purchase clear labels for my jars, because in most cases I prefer things uniform and simple.  Though, I think making your own artistic labels would also be incredibly pretty.  I bought my labels at Organize.com.  I altered them by cutting off the rounded edges (I like straight lines).  Incidentally, this was also the largest collection of printed labels I could find (set of 96).

I've had a few people ask where I purchased my stainless steel kitchen magnets (that appear to the left of the spice jars).  I bought them here and there from different places, and I honestly can't remember where because it's been a while.  But I did manage to find them on Amazon.  I've included them in the product carousel below (with a few other neat little matching stainless steel accessories).

8 Uses for Baby Wipes

I have often told my husband that when our little girl is no longer wearing diapers, I will still keep baby wipes in the house (regardless of the addition of any children).  Why?  Because they are AWESOME!  There are so many little uses for baby wipes that I never considered until we had Emmy:

  1. After Dinner Wipe - After eating a terribly messy meal (such as ribs or bbq chicken), baby wipes make the perfect "cleaner-upper" for hands and faces.
  2. Soothing Wipe - Baby wipes make great soothing solutions to a nasty sunburn.
  3. Makeup Wipe - The perfect makeup remover!  No time spent putting solutions onto wipes or cotton, and no icky "oily" residue left behind.
  4. Cleansing Wipe - When you can't wash a cut or scrape in a sink, these make great cleansing alternatives to use before applying ointment and a bandage.
  5. Dusting Wipe - Everything from keyboards to bathroom sinks can be "dusted" with a baby wipe.
  6. Blotting Wipe - Baby wipes can blot up small spills from upholstery and carpet.
  7. Auto Wipe - Keeping wipes in your car can provide you with cleanup from pumping gas or eating on-the-go.
  8. Workout Wipe - Baby wipes are great for cleaning up after a workout.  Use them to wipe your brow (or other sweaty parts, if needed) or to clean off equipment.

BONUS:  You can also use the empty baby wipes containers to store small items such as: sewing supplies, loose change, plastic bags, first-aid supplies, et cetera.

Dishwasher Energy Savers

Here is a list of things that you can do with your dishwasher that will save you energy (and money) in the long run:
  1. Stop washing your dishes by hand.  Dishwashers actually use less water, and subsequently, less heat.
  2. Let dishes air dry in lieu of heat drying.
  3. Rinse dishes in cold water.  Oftentimes, cold water will do the same job with less energy.
  4. Do not use the "rinse & hold" feature on your dishwasher.
  5. Fill the dishwasher completely before running it.

Perpetual Produce Calendar

I have always wanted to grow things: spices, fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers, you name it.  Alas, I do not have (nor will I ever likely have) a "green" thumb.  In fact, I have a downright brown, wilted thumb.  However, if I was good at managing any kind of garden, I would use this handy little produce calendar.  It tells you (by region) which months are best for planting and harvesting.  Actually, they also tell you when certain produce is in season (for buying), so I might get some use out of this little calendar after all...

Uses for Peppermint Essential Oil

I use essential oils for tons of things around our house.  This is a list of some of my favorite things to do with peppermint essential oil:

  1. Energize Your Workout:  Mix about 50 drops of peppermint essential oil with 1 cup of water and place in a spray bottle.  Use the bottle to spritz your yoga mat or exercise equipment.  Alternatively, you can skip the middleman and just inhale the oil scent prior to working out.
  2. Freshen Your Home:  Use the same mixture above to make a spray for your home.
  3. Stay Alert When Driving:  Take an old, worn out, hanging automobile air freshener (or make a brand new one out of simple felt).  Place a few drops of peppermint oil onto the air freshener and hang from the car mirror or in front of vents.
  4. Keep Socks/Shoes Fresher:  Place a few drops on the bottoms of your socks.
  5. Wake Up:  Drop a tiny amount onto the shower floor about 1-2 minutes before entering the shower.
  6. Calm Stomach:  Inhale a bit of peppermint oil from the bottle when you have slight stomach upset or sea sickness.
  7. Relax:  Mix 1/8 cup water with 12 drops peppermint oil.  Use the mixture to rub on temples or to massage aching muscles.
  8. Remain Sharp at Work:  Purchase a diffuser (a reed diffuser is recommended for safety reasons) and use peppermint oil with it.  Keep it at your work station to inhale as the day wears on.
  9. Bath Time:  Mix a few drops of peppermint oil with some epsom salt and add to running bath water.

Makeup Palette Organizer

The UNII makeup organizer is a must-have for those of us who like to carry multiple makeup items with us at all times.  This neat little palette is magnetic and holds onto each metallic makeup "pan."  It can hold brushes, shadows, blushes, glosses, et cetera.  The best feature is that all your makeup can be stored in one place to make the transition from "day" to "evening" makeup that much easier!  Nifty!  Click here to check it out!

Nature's Cure Acne Treatment (Tablets and Cream)

For those of you who know me personally, you know that once a month I tend to breakout - horribly.  And these are no "normal" breakouts; I get terrible cystic acne along my jawline.  It's incredibly painful and it lasts for weeks.  It starts about a week before my "aunt" visits, it stays for the duration of "her" visit, and it doesn't go away until about a week after "she" has left.  So... THREE weeks with a broke out face, and ONE week of near-clarity.  That's an appalling ratio!  I had very mild acne as a teenager, but after Emmy was born, my skin just became a mess.  I have tried more acne products than I can count on both hands, and I was getting fed up and desperate.

A friend of mine recommended that I try Nature's Cure Two-Part Acne Treatment System (for Women).  I have to say, it worked tremendously for me - in the beginning.  After only 3 days of taking the tablets, my face was smoothing out considerably (acne marking/scarring still remained and needed additional products to treat, but that's to be expected).  The cream that comes with this kit is your standard benzoyl peroxide (5%) cream and does what all the other ones do - dries existing pimples out.  It should be noted that the cream does nothing for cystic acne, because that acne is too deep under the skin.

On the third day of taking the tablets, I noticed a red rash developing across my clavicle (right under my neck).  I really wanted the rash to have a different origin, because the pills were working phenomenally.  I continued taking the pills and the rash continued to spread - downward.  I stopped taking the pills, almost hoping that the rash would get worse (or at least remain) so I could know that the pills weren't causing it.  The rash went away after a few days of not taking the pills.  Once my acne flared-up again, I resumed the pills.  The rash came back after 2 days this time.  I thought I was having an allergic reaction, and it resulted in me doing a bit more research on this product.  I found out that one of the active ingredients is "candida albicans," in layman's terms... yeast.  After further research, I discovered that an abundance of yeast in your system can actually cause a rosacea-like rash in individuals who are sensitive.  :(

I have since moved on to other products, but I may try the men's formula in the future.  According to the website, either formula can be taken by any sex (as per their FAQs page).  The men's formula does not contain yeast.  The differences between the two formulas is 3 ingredients.  The men's formula has omitted the (1) yeast, (2) potassium bromide, and (3) frost weed and replaced them with (1) marigold, (2) golden seal, and (3) wild licorice.

I did not get the results I wanted with Nature's Cure, but I'm not ready to close the door on them just yet.  After all, the tablets did do their job initially.  They still have a 3-part facial cleansing system (similar to other 3-part anti-acne systems), the men's formula tablets, and a 2-part cleansing system.  With the additional products that they offer, I'm not ready to write them off.  And I'm not completely at a loss.  If nothing else, this ordeal has taught me to be extra-mindful of products that I put into my body.

Zapzyt Maximum Strength - Acne Spot Treatment

This acne gel boasts 10% benzoyl peroxide (the highest concentration you can currently buy over-the-counter).  It worked to dry out existing pimples, but did nothing to actually prevent acne from rearing its ugly head.  It also does not dry out cystic acne, as it is so deep beneath the skin.  Because it has a tendency to dry out the skin, it is best used as a spot treatment only.  Some people swear that benzoyl peroxide dyes fabrics, but I have never had issues with it.  I let it dry before I put anything near my face.  As with all benzoyl peroxide products, avoid excessive sun exposure and wear a sunscreen.  Overall, this product seems to be a suitable spot treatment, but other steps are needed in my personal skincare routine to prevent acne and to reverse acne damage.

Make Your Own "Smelly Jelly"

I love to burn candles, but I can't always have them lit  because of Emmy and 2 horrible little kitties that could cause accidents.  This is especially true in our bathroom.  We keep the bathroom door closed at all times (to keep children and animals from unrolling the TP), and burning candles in a closed room is a huge no-no.  So, to freshen the air in those rooms, I use "smelly jelly."  Some people call these "flameless candles," but no matter what you call it, it serves the same purpose.

What you'll need:

1 jelly jar (8 oz)
1/2 cup boiling water
1 envelope non-flavored gelatin
1/2 cup cool water
1/8 teaspoon vodka
1/2 teaspoon essential oil (your choice of fragrance, see notes below)
food coloring, optional

Directions:
  1. Empty gelatin mix into jelly jar, add boiling water and stir to dissolve.
  2. Add cool water and stir thoroughly.
  3. Add vodka and sitr thoroughly.
  4. Add essential oil and stir thoroughly.
  5. If desired, add food coloring for tint; stir thoroughly.
  6. Let cool for about 30 minutes.
  7. Screw lid on jar (tightly) and shake very well.
  8. Place in freezer for about 15-20 minutes, or until set.
  9. To use, remove lid.
Notes:
  • Replace lid when not in use.  This will ensure that your smelly jelly lasts for several weeks.
  • Keep away from heat or direct sunlight.
  • When choosing a scent, try to choose scents in their purest form (for longer life and stronger smell).  If you choose a scent that is a mixture of scents, it will not work nearly as well.
  • When adding color, add only one drop at a time (this will ensure that no food coloring gets wasted).  To achieve the bright blue color you see above, I used only 3 drops of blue food coloring.
